Saturday (23 points)

Exercise: 520m swim.

Meal 1: Portuguese cake plus half an almond croissant at Coffee#1.

2015-01-31 10.17.30

Drinks: Cappuccino. Coffee. Effervescent vitamin C. Latte. Hot chocolate.

Meal 2: Chicken stir fry with brown rice. (Over 1lb of it.)

Comment 1: Need to read a little of the Greek Doctor book.

Comment 2: Need to watch the swimming instruction videos.

Snack: Snickers.

Best Work Lunch Ever (21 points)

Breakfast: Porridge with seeds and honey.

Drinks: Teas. Coffee.

Lunch: Small Burrito.

2015-01-30 11.59.15

Snack: Lush Ben’s Cookie.
2015-01-30 12.20.49

Dinner: Chicken stir fry with brown rice.

Fruit: Small portion of dried rubbard with pear and something else.

Alcohol: Glass of white wine. Two small Asahi beers (1.7 units each). Pint of Stowford Press (2 units).

Exercise: Walked to the train station and back, had a long walk at lunchtime and walked to Tesco in the evening: 13548 steps.

Comment 1: Chewed gum whilst putting the food away.

Comment 2: This was a 3 point day as I’ve lost weight since last week (now 10st8), I kept the Golden Rule and I only had 3 meals and one treat plus fruit.

A New Breakthrough (18 points)

Comment 1: I found I was lingering over my dinner today – still stuffing even though I was full – as I didn’t want to do various chores like tidying and studying. The breakthrough is that I’ll only ever do any task for 45 minutes for now on. Each 45 minutes should be followed by a 5 minute chill-out (except in dire emergencies).

Comment 2: I’ve put a postcard about The Golden Rule on the living room table to remind me not to eat and watch TV. I seem to forget this rule when inebriated.

Breakfast: Tinned mackerel in Thai sauce on slice of unbuttered toast.

Lunch: Stir fry with brown rice.

Drinks: Teas. Coffees.

Legitimate snack: Lush sticky toffee pudding sample at CostCo.

Infringement snacks: Thick soup sample with crushed nuts. Chilli nuts from colleague.

Shelled nuts: About 10 pistachios (sadly whilst looking at a screen).

Dinner: Stir fry with brown rice. Listened to a podcast whilst eating. The Golden Rule of not eating and reading is starting to become a habit.

Procrastinating snack: Bite out of a Wispa.

Fruit: apple whilst watching The Inebriati.

More snacks: More Wispa. Some mixed nuts. Snickers bar. Florentine. Not sure if the stuffing is because I don’t want to study or as I’m dreading weighing myself tomorrow.

Even more snacks: 2 more Florentines. Left-over rice.

Had a moment when I was studying when I thought ‘this is too hard’. I think this triggered the stuffing session more than fear of tomorrow’s weigh in. After a while it started to make sense and I didn’t want to stop. I need to think when something is hard: The assembly of Japanese bicycle requires great serenity of mind.

Exercise: 20 minute walk. Very slippery.

The Inebriati (18 points)

Breakfast: Porridge with cinnamon and salt.

Lunch: Chicken and sausage mayo sandwich.

Exercise: Walk to Sainsbury’s – 41 minutes.

Nuts in shell: Pistachios.

Drinks: Teas. Coffee.

Dinner: Stir Fry.

Comment 1: From The New Scientist:

Bernard Morcheles sends his tip for losing weight. He stresses that “this is not a diet” and we leave you to imagine the emphatic typography. His secret is simple: “Don’t put anything in your mouth larger than the size of the first joint of your thumb; chew everything completely before swallowing; and don’t put anything else in your mouth until you have swallowed.”

Comment 2: I haven’t had much fruit recently. Will have an apple soon.

Snack: Cheddar, biscuits and pickle. (Ate in front of Wolf Hall as forgot about the golden rule.)

Alcohol: Very nearly two pints of Stowford Press.

2.6 km swim (17 points)

Breakfast: Porridge with salt.

Lunch: Chicken mayo sandwich.

Drinks: Teas. Coffees. Hot chocolate.

Dinner: Stir Fry.

Exercise: About an hour’s walk in total – 7998 steps – 265 kcal. Swam 130 lengths of the pool in 1hour 28 minutes. (Had to walk a few lengths as got cramp.)

Comment 1: Never go down the pool before 8pm. It was bedlam at 7.30pm.

Comment 2: I love porridge with seeds and honey, but could manage it with salt every other day.

Veuve Clicquot arrives in the Post (15 points)

Breakfast: Porridge with seeds and honey.

Lunch: Ham mayo sandwich.

Fruit: Tangerine.

Dinner: Stir fry.

Snack: Small amount of banana cake.

Extra snack: Houmous and bread.

Another snack: Snickers.

Drinks: Teas. Coffees.

Alcohol: J sent me a bottle of Veuve Clicquot for fixing her computer. (Thanks to SB as without him it would now be a brick.) Drank the entire bottle to myself as B and DM were drinking whisky.

Exercise: Over 30 minutes walking.

I get one point as I don’t think I broke the golden rule (no eating and reading/watching a screen).

Comment 1: Remember to time myself when going out walking and take a note of the pedometer before starting.

Comment 2: Need to get out more as the sitting on the sofa is a recipe for disaster.

Lobster (14 points)

Meal 1: Heavenly small burrito at Mission Burrito.

Drinks: Chai latte from new café in the Oracle where Thornton’s used to be. Chai latte from AMT on the station. Tea. Bitter lemon. Lush Green and Black’s hot chocolate with frothed milk.

Meal 2: Some blueberry muffin whilst watching TV.

Meal 3: The Szechuan Inn, Thatcham.

Comment 1: Was seriously considering breaking the 3 drinking days per week rule. The hot chocolate really helped.

Comment 2: Was too lazy to go for a swim today. If in doubt I should always go – even if it’s only for 20 lengths. Otherwise the challenge amount will become massive.
